Red Sox Outfield Options: Grichuk, Marte, or Pham? (2026)

The Boston Red Sox are reportedly on the lookout for experienced outfielders as they seek to bolster their lineup with a right-handed batter. This offseason, the Red Sox have been quite active in the player market, yet there remains an evident gap following Alex Bregman’s departure.

Just yesterday, MLB insiders Will Sammon and Katie Woo from The Athletic shared insights indicating that the team is actively pursuing a right-handed hitting outfielder, alongside their priority of securing a right-handed infielder. They noted, "While adding a right-handed infielder is currently a greater focus for the Boston Red Sox, the organization is also considering potential additions in the outfield from the available free agents," which certainly piques interest among fans and analysts alike.

Among those free agents are notable names such as Randal Grichuk, Starling Marte, and Tommy Pham. Last season, Grichuk posted a .703 OPS against left-handed pitchers at the age of 34, while Marte, at 37, recorded a .733 OPS, and Pham, also 37, had a .651 OPS. If we take a closer look at their batting performances over the past three seasons against lefties, Grichuk has managed a remarkable .857 OPS across 501 plate appearances, with Marte sitting at .748 from 356 plate appearances, and Pham at .716 from 418 appearances.

As it stands, the Red Sox's outfield currently consists of center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, Roman Anthony, Jarren Duran, and Masataka Yoshida. Notably, only Rafaela bats from the right side, reinforcing the team's need for additional right-handed hitting.

With spring training just around the corner and these veterans still available on the market, Boston might be able to sign one on a cost-effective deal, presenting a low-risk opportunity for the franchise. Despite numerous acquisitions already made this offseason, it seems that the Red Sox are not finished yet and continue to explore avenues to enhance their roster.

What do you think about the Red Sox's strategy? Are they making the right moves, or do you believe they should be focusing their efforts elsewhere? Join the conversation and share your thoughts!
