Indra Brown has made a striking impression in the world of extreme sports, clinching a remarkable silver medal during her debut at the X-Games held in Aspen. This achievement not only highlights her immense talent but also sets the stage for her upcoming participation in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina.
Just recently selected for her first Olympic team, the 15-year-old skier has proven that her rapid ascent on the World Cup circuit is no mere coincidence; she has positioned herself as a strong contender for medals in Milan next month.
As two-time freestyle skiing X-Games gold medalist Maggie Voisin noted during the event commentary, "I feel like she's just building momentum, building confidence. She’s saying to herself, ‘I have three World Cup podiums, I now have an X-Games podium. Why not an Olympic medal?’" This sentiment captures the excitement surrounding Brown and her potential for future success.
Australia's chef de mission, Alissa Camplin-Warner, expressed her hopes for Brown, advising her to enjoy the Olympic experience without succumbing to excessive pressure. "What I hope is that she can just be open to the whole experience, enjoy it, and not heap too much pressure on herself," Camplin-Warner stated when announcing the squad in Melbourne. However, with performances like hers, it's clear that there will be significant anticipation and support when she hits the slopes in February.
In challenging conditions characterized by heavy snowfall that slowed the superpipe, Brown opened the competition strongly, scoring an impressive 80.00 in her first attempt, placing her fourth after the initial round. Despite being the youngest competitor this year, she showed remarkable poise and skill at this prestigious event.
The crowd was treated to an exhilarating performance as Brown executed flawless back-to-back 900s, followed by a 720, successive switch 360s, and a big alley-oop to cap off her run. In her second attempt, she raised the bar even higher, demonstrating greater amplitude along the pipe and achieving a score of 88.33, which propelled her into provisional second place.
With the order reshuffled for the final run, Brown found herself in the spotlight, going last after leading earlier in the competition. Rising to the occasion, she further improved her score to an impressive 90.00. Nonetheless, she couldn't quite match Britain's Zoe Atkin, who distinguished herself from the competition.
Atkin, the reigning world champion and a top favorite for gold at the Livigno Ski Park next month, consistently enhanced her performance across three runs, ultimately securing the gold medal with a stunning score of 94.66. Meanwhile, last year's champion, Canada's Cassie Sharpe, aged 33—significantly older than Brown—earned the bronze medal.
Earlier in the day, Australian snowboarder Tess Coady finished fourth in the women's slopestyle event. Britain’s Mia Brookes took home the gold with a score of 96.33 on her second attempt, while New Zealand's Zoi Sadowski-Synnott landed a commendable 93.00 on her final run, securing a place on the podium. Although Coady improved her score in her last run, it wasn’t sufficient to surpass Japan's Kokomo Murase, who scored 89.66. Coady, who previously won bronze in Beijing, is gearing up to compete in both slopestyle and big air events at the upcoming Milan Cortina Games next month.
