Aussie cricket legend Alana King, despite a recent setback, remains determined to represent her country at the upcoming T20 World Cup. King, known for her leg-spin wizardry, has expressed her disappointment at being overlooked for Australia's T20 squad to face India. However, she refuses to let this deter her from her ultimate goal.
King's omission from the squad, despite her impressive performance in the recent World Cup campaign, has sparked some controversy. She was Australia's second-highest wicket-taker during the tournament, achieving record-breaking figures against South Africa. But here's where it gets interesting: King's wrist spin wasn't enough to secure her a spot in the 14-player squad for the India series, which begins this Sunday at the SCG.
Speaking to Fox Cricket, King shared her thoughts on the matter. "It's always a letdown when you're not selected for a big series like this one against India," she said. "But I understand that not everyone can make the cut."
King's statistics from last year's T20Is speak for themselves: six wickets at an average of 16.33 and an economy rate of 7.53. Yet, she found herself on the outside looking in, with the squad also including captain Sophie Molineux and all-rounder Ash Gardner.
So, what's next for King? With only a handful of T20Is scheduled before the next World Cup, King is focused on the present. "I'm just taking it one step at a time," she explained. "I can only control my own performances and training, and that's what I'm going to do."
King recently recovered from a fractured little finger, which she sustained during the WBBL season. This injury, she confessed, impacted her bowling during the T20 competition. However, she's confident that she'll be ready for the India series.
"I never thought a small injury like this would affect my bowling so much," King said with a smile. "But I'm feeling good now, and I'm eager to get back out there."
India, the reigning world champions, will be a tough opponent for Australia. King, who has trained alongside some of India's players, recognizes the challenge ahead. "We know we're up against the best," she said. "But we also know that our best is world-class."
The multi-format series against India will conclude with a four-day Test at the WACA, King's home ground. She hopes that the redeveloped venue will continue to host women's international cricket regularly.
"I love playing at the WACA," King declared. "It's a great venue for cricket, and I think it adds a unique element to the women's game."
King's journey has been an interesting one. Since switching allegiances and moving to Western Australia, she's had to adapt her bowling style to suit the hard deck at the WACA, which provides additional bounce. Despite the venue traditionally favoring fast bowlers, King has expanded her repertoire of deliveries.
"People were skeptical about spin bowling at the WACA," she recalled. "But I think that challenge has helped me grow as a bowler."
Sunday's T20 series opener will mark a new era for Australia, with Sophie Molineux leading the team as the multi-format captain. King, who played alongside Molineux at Victoria, praised her leadership skills.
"Sophie is an incredible leader," King said. "I'm excited to see her take on this new role and make it her own."
As for the future of the Australian women's cricket team, King is optimistic. With the retirement of Alyssa Healy, who will captain Australia for the upcoming ODIs and Test against India, King believes the team is in good hands.
"Healy has been an incredible asset to the team," King said. "We'll miss her fiery spirit, but I think we can honor her legacy by putting on some great performances."
